A good and possibly the only cheap option in Atlanta Jul 01, 2011
Located in the Midtown section of the city, the Atlanta International Hostel is the only one in town, with the heart-shaped sign in front saying “Woodruff Inn”. It is about 4 blocks from the nearest MARTA station, the North Ave stop.

Along the way, you may get hassled by people who will ask for a couple dollars, but just keep on going and ignore them. The area does not look particularly inviting, as you are walking away from the Georgia Tech campus.

The rooms are very basic, and the place can be a little comfortable at times, as the ventilation is not very good. And the room has an old AC unit, which does an okay job to cool the room. But it still does feel a little humid at times. The bathrooms are okay, although there is only 1 per dorm room.

The big drawback is that the front desk is closed in the middle of the day, from 1pm to 4pm (but I don’t recall exactly). And this can be a big problem, if you arrive at that time, on a very hot day, and you are a bit desperate to go inside to get out of the intense heat. The worst part of this, is that it was not mentioned at all on the hostel web site or the booking site.

The staff are really nice, and very helpful. There is internet, but the rates are not so good. There is a small kitchen and dining room, which are okay. And a lounge to hang out and watch TV.

Overall, the hostel itself is an okay place to stay at. But if you are not on a budget, I would suggest to find another place to stay at. It is a bit out of the way, and the front desk being closed in the middle of the day, is a big minus, especially when coming in the summer.

Continuing on from the Smokies blog left off (the start of that blog here), I came back into the state of Georgia, and to the Atlanta area. I have been to this city only once, which was back in 2002 …Atlanta International Hostel, as I could not wait to get inside. When getting to the door, I saw that…
