I decided that for such a monumental birthday, I wanted someplace truely, monumental. Athens, was the obvious choice. So much history, so much culture, so much of who we are as a modern civilization started here. This was the perfect place to mark the date in my history.

It was a trip to the capital of Greece, Athens and surrondings. It includes a short trip to Ydra island.

In the fall of '98 I decided to treat myself to a European advenure and went to 13 countries in about 45 days. It was one of the best experiences of my life!

Just photos with brief explanations from 90 days traveling in Greece, May-August, 2003. Mostly Cycladic islands and archaeology, because I was there as an archaeology student. Explanations may be forthcoming!

i've finally managed to escape the oh-so-fascinating world of hedge fund finance, and am now decadently indulging my long-suppressed wanderlust with 15 months on the road and around the world... *note: apart from the odd review (generally of something not found in your standard guide book), this is really more just a map of my travels than a proper blog, but if you want more information on anywhere i`ve been or what i`ve been up to, send me a message and i`ll see if i can rustle something up.

Here are some pics from my 4 night stay in Athens. My friends had met up with me for the last week, so here I was back to the solo traveler life style. I must say that Budapest proved to be one of the largest surprises of the trip. It could be because I didn't expect as much from it as some of the other cities, but it proved to be a GREAT time!

It came as a bolt from the blue...the trip to Athens. Official, I converted it into leisure and I must say I really enjoyed the break, though I was travelling alone. While Athens did not knock me off my balance..it was cool. I loved walking around Plaka with its amazing shopping gullies, overlooking the Acropolis. Yes, how can I forget digging into a grilled Octopus. People back home want to disown me for that. Disturbing part of Athens (atleast near Omonia), junkies rule.

Inpakken maar want ik ga weer eens op vakantie. Ellen (mijn zus) bracht me naar Schiphol, dat vrij dicht in de buurt is dus daar waren we zo. Het vliegtuig vertrok prima op tijd maar veel uitzicht had ik niet want we zaten al gauw midden in een wolkendek. We vlogen met een A310 en onderweg mochten …

I arrived in Athens following an eight-hour plane ride from Washington, DC to Paris and a four-hour connection from there. I did not manage to get any sleep the entire journey, although I managed to snag a seat with about ten feet of leg room, making the plane ride more comfortable. I people-watche…

Ferry to Athens from Italy. A weeks worth of travel to Athens, Olympia, Thessaloniki and Santorini.Ancient ruins covered in scaffolding(lead up to Olympics), stray dogs that ride trains, spanikopita, guards with silly shoes, and more ruins.
