There are better hostels in Cairns, skip this one! Sep 25, 2011
We checked in here because the reviews online sounds really good. Mainly that the atmosphere was great, great opportunity to meet people and basically that is what people said most about the hostel. When I told my local friends who work in the dive industry and do pick ups daily from hostels around Cairns, they were more than disappointed that we decided to stay here.

A) it is about a 15 minute walk from the down center. There are nice hostels, that are cheaper right in Cairns center

B) the place looks run down

C) female bathroom is very small, once sink, one toilet one shower vs the guys that have multiple bathroom and showers and much larger sink and mirror with plug ins

D) the one dude running the hostel can be kind of rude. While another guy was pretty nice and made an effort to get to know our names.

E) the common area is nice with picnic tables and comfy chairs, along with a tv where they often play movies for everyone to watch.

F) breakfast was cornflakes served until 9

G) kitchen is spacious although it needs a good cleaning out. Fridges were full of bags from people I'm sure that are long gone.

Basically, I think for the value, the location and how run down the hostel is, you can find way better hostels inside Cairns. Gilligans, Corona Backpackers ect.

$15 per day including free breakfast (corn flakes) and free dinner (at woolshed), what else would I expect? :P

Staff was really friendly and nice. They ACTUALLY enjoy people staying there, that's something special about it-- money does not mean anything here, as long as you have fun!

I met heaps of interesting people there. Some of them even became my very dearest friends! :D

Party hostel Jul 07, 2008
Nice and friendly staff with a couple of totally crazy guests. Only thing I didn't like was that our room was full of bugs. One of my roommates had his leg eaten during the night and when we woke up his leg was one big open wound. The Asylum hostel also has a pool, but it wasn't in use since it was pretty filthy. But that's not why you're there in the first place... You're there for the fun, the Mad Mondays pub crawls and all the crazy inmates at the Asylum! :D

Highly recommended if you want to party and meet a lot of crazy people.

This was the far best hostel I've stayed in while we were away! It's $15 dollars a night with a free meal, Free internet and Free tea and coffee. The people who run it are always up for a laff and forever organising great nights out for the backpackers! Every Monday they have a Pub crawl known as Mad Monday which is $10 the 1st one you go to which gives you a Asylum t-shirt, Free dinner and 5 free drinks also lots of games and also chance to win trips scuba diving and free nights accomodation. Then it is $5 dollars everyone you intend to after as u already have your t-shirt. On Wednesday night is Ladies night free champagne for 2 hours in Rhino bar and Kareoke at My bar with free shots and free champagne. Friday nights is BBQ or Pizza night where you pay $5 dollars eat as much as you like. Just go stay there its just to good to miss!
Mad monday crew!

This morning we got up at a decent time and made our way to Sea World. It was another nice day out so we were pretty lucky. Again, we just caught a local bus for about $4.00 and it only took roughly …Asylum is grunchy as it was in Cairns, but it was cheap, and we only plan to spend a night…
