Peruvian Food in Mexico City Apr 29, 2014
I travel to Mexico City often for business. I enjoy my trips there (very much so) as I am convinced that Mexico City has the highest quantity of high quality restaurants in the world. I have had just about any cuisine known to man there - I have reviewed several of those restaurants in my TB profile. The latest notch on my Mexico City restaurant belt is Astrid and Gaston, a Peruvian restaurant located in the heart of Polanco. We went for a late lunch / early dinner here as I had just arrived from the U.S. and we had some immediately business to tend to, so we were practically the only people in the restaurant. My colleagues in Mexico are great fun, so we don't need an active ambiance to liven our mood anyway, plus, with fewer people there, the service tends to be more attentive. We started our feast (because that's would it would turn into) with a round of Pisco Sours (the debate continues whether it was the Peruvians or the Chileans invented this egg and lime cocktail). We then had our traditional Tequila (just because we always have one with our meal). We then selected a red wine to have with our dinner. The service was very formal and extremely responsive. The first food that hit the table was a selection of freshly baked breads (and they were FRESH) with a nice selection of different flavored salsas and butters. Known for their civiche, our first course was 4 different ones and all were excellently prepared and presented. For dinner, I had the house specialty which is a suckling pig, which was nothing that the casual chef would ever prepare at home. It literally fell off the bone and the skin was crispy and added an element of flavor to the tender meat underneath it. After lunch / dinner, I had dessert, which I don't always do, but in this particular case, there was a caramel option that came highly recommended. Looked too interesting to pass up. All in all, I rate this restaurant excellent in all categories and found it to be a fun experience from start to finish.
