We decided to drive back to Portland on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, crossing at Astoria.  The causeway and bridge over the Columbia is is a engineering marvel -- very long and dramatic.  It's a four mile long crossing that was completed in 1966.  We were told that the seagulls like to cruise along beside your car and try to get something to eat.  I had taken a piece of an English muffin from my breakfast to try my luck, but alas, no gulls took the bait.  th...

Astoria Column

Litchfield and decorated by Italian-born artist Attilio Pusterla, using a sgraffito technique. It was patterned after the Trajan Column in Rome, Italy. We crossed into Oregon along the long, Long, LONG bridge (OK, it's shorter than Chesapeake Bay and the Keys, but still...) that took us into Astoria.  We still have a ways to go before we hit our first Hotel, but we're making OK time.

September 8, 2008 Today we started off by saying good-bye to everyone. It was very hard to say good-bye to everyone after so much fun. We went to the Lewis and Clark Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark spent the winter. We first watched a presentation on Pomp, the Indian interpreter, Sacagawea's, child. He was in the four things that helped settle the west. 1) L...
