Gorgeous historic hotel on the north tip of the Bund Sep 25, 2011
We stayed one night here in the Richard Executive room. The room was huge and nicely appointed with a large bathroom and rain shower. It was very clean and comfortable. The hotel was built back in 1846 and was to be the most elegant hotel in all of asia at that time. President Grant, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chapman, Bertrand Russell all stayed here to name a few. The staff was helpful and spoke good english. We ate at the restaurant where there was a choice of western and chinese dishes. We ended up having spanish onion soup and t-bone steak which was very good. Prices are very high for chinese standards, and pricy-ish for even western standards. The breakfast buffet which was in the gorgeous ballroom was very good with a large selection of chinese and western dishes including made to order omelets, a variety of fruits, breads, cereals, hot and cold dishes. The location is excellent.. you cross the bridge and then are directly on the Bund which is something to see, especially at night when all the buildings are lit up!

Good value at a great location May 22, 2011
The Astor House Hotel is a historical landmark and is a two-minute-walk from the Bund. Just walk over the bridge (Wai Bai Du Qiao) across the Suzhou Creek and you’re right into the thick of the action... the Bund is such a wonderful sight at night. There is also a nearby subway station (Tiantong Road) on the new line 10.

We were lucky enough to get an upgrade from a Celebrity room to an Executive room and so we had more space and comfort. Considering the very reasonable price found on Expedia, I found this overall deal to be a great value for Shanghai.

While the interior style was very much reminiscent of an old European building, we had all the amenities of a modern hotel. The bathroom had both a bath tub and a shower. Internet was available for free in the room, though it required an Ethernet cable (provided), a common occurrence in China. The service was good, the staff quite professional and there was no issue with English at this hotel.

In conclusion, I recommend this hotel for travelers looking to stay right by the Bund at a reasonable price.

Be part of Shanghai's history May 21, 2011
I stayed at the Astor House Hotel since they did not have rooms at the Le Meridien, Shanghai when I came back from Chengdu.

That was one of my best decisions in my life. I stayed in the same room as Charlie Chaplin did, 2 times in his life time. My opposite room was the suite where US President Grant stayed long back.

Man the wooden floors give you that nostalgic feeling. Can never forget this.

The location is not bad either. It is away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to reach Xin Tian Di. It is also close to the waterfront where you can watch the river cruises... There is also a restaurant by the waterfront in the shape of a boat itself.

I would recommend this place to anyone.

Luxury in Shanghai at inexpensive prices. Mar 29, 2011
The Astor House is one of those classic hotels that make the history of Shanghai. It was originally called the Richards Hotel and then had the name changed to Astor House back in the early 1900's. Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, and other famous people stayed here when visiting Shanghai.

The web price was considerably lower than quoted ($80 vs $200) and was a great bargain with its breakfast buffet (included).

The rooms were enormous and had all the amenities you would expect of a four star hotel.

Wonder if Einstien would have liked the rain shower May 12, 2008
Built in 1846 and just remodled . the Hotel boost that President Grant stayed there, Chaplian and all so Einstien.. It just across the canal from The Bund area. And about a bock from the river. We stayed on the second floor which was the executive floor. The room was modern. very clean, and had this OH WOW bath room! the bedroom and the bath were seperated by a glass window that ran the lenght of the bedroom and it has a power blind that came down when one wanted privacy. And it had this amazing rian shower that was massive. The cost was about 120.00 Canadian a night and included a breakfast brunch served in the Ballroom.

only problem was the doorman when ever he hail a cab he ask us were we wanted to go. And when ever we said the South Shanghai rail station he tell the cabbie the wrong one!Number of times we ended up at the Shanghai Rail station and had to that the subway to the south one.
