If you've done all of Oxford's colleges and yearn for some nature without any academics around, why not drive to Aston Wood? Some 20 miles outside Oxford, you will find a lovely forest which looks good in all seasons: light green and suffused with countless bluebells in spring, shady and cooling under the dark green canopy in summer, colourful and windy in autumn, bleak and forbidding under wild winter skies. When living in Oxford, I loved to visit Aston Wood in spring to take countless photos of the bluebells. As most of Aston Wood looks pretty much untouched, you can get some good pics of old tree trunks and the intensive blue of the bluebells.

After a stroll through the forest, you might want to continue to Turville, hidden in the hills of the Chilterns on the other side of the M40 and one of the nicest villages around.

To reach Aston Wood, take the M40 towards London and leave it at junction 5, Stokenchurch. Turn towards Stokenchurch, but don't drive into the village. Instead turn left immediately after leaving the highway to get onto A40. A little car park can be found on your left after 800m.
