Assumption of Our Lady Church Apr 26, 2017
Assumption of Our Lady Church in Ruska Street (Ruthenian Street) is the most famous Ukrainian sight in this city. It is a part of an architectural ensemble located at 9 Pidvalna Street, consists of several unique historical buildings:

- Virgin Mary Assumption Church, built from 1592 to 1629;

- Corniactos Belfry, built from 1572 to 1580 and then remodeled until 1695;

- Three Hierarchs’ Chapel, built from 1578 to 1591.

Paolo Dominici Romanus (1560-1618), a Lviv architect of Italian origin, was the chief designer of the construction. He made a very special synthesis of the Renaissance style and traditional forms of Galician architecture.

The church has been the center of the Ukrainian Orthodox faith for hundreds of years. It is famous for its architecture, its belfry and the huge bell.

The belfry is 65 meters high. It is called Corniaktos Tower to commemorate the charity activities of Constantine Corniactos, a famous Lviv merchant, who sponsored the construction of the entire impressive architectural ensemble.

The belfry contains Kyrylo Bell (Cyril’s Bell) that is 2 meters in diameters and 2 meters in height. The bell weighs 3.5 tons.

Three Saints’ Chapel is adjacent to the cathedral.

It was built in 1590 by Alexander Balaban. The chapel is connected with the cathedral.

It is famous for its lavish wood carving and perfect proportions that make it a masterpiece of the Ukrainian Renaissance architecture.

The parish of the Ukrainian Assumption Church is one of the oldest in Ukraine.

There was Assumption Fraternity here that played a great role in the history of Lviv.

It had the right of stauropegia, that is, it was independent of the local church hierarchy.

To the right of the entrance to the church there is an old building of the state archives with a monument to Ivan Fiodorov in front of it.

He was invited by Assumption Fraternity to Lviv from Moscow and published the first ABC Book and the Apostle in thousands of copies and with great quality here.

By the way, Ruska Street (Ruthenian Street) is the narrowest street in Lviv.

There is only space for streetcar tracks.

The cars have to drive along the tracks that are deep in the road and do not interfere with the traffic.
