History Apr 27, 2011
Dating from around the twelfth or thirteenth century, and set up with a Romanesque facade, this cathedral is a major church in Assisi and second only to the basilica dedicated to Saint Francis of course. However, this is a key church if you are a bit of a fan of Saint Francis - the saint was baptised here and preached here on many occasions. Saint Clare, one of Francis’s closest followers, was also baptised here and received her calling here too. Great history trivia here then!

Apart from that, there isn’t much to see here unfortunately. Unlike the basilica in Assisi, this cathedral doesn’t have a wonderful set of frescoes to marvel at. The interior is rather plain and puritanical, and there aren’t many chapels that are noteworthy either. However, if you’ve paid tribute to Saint Francis in his basilica, this is a very worthy pit stop just to round off the picture!
