Assen Overview

Assen, which is located in the northern dutch provence 'Drenthe' has 65.000 inhabitants in 2007. For now it's the quickest growing provence of the north of the Netherlands. The oldest proves of settlement are from 1258, which is a monastery. In order of the great Napoleon himself, which had Assen as his summer-residence, Assen became a city with city-rights in 1807. In 1814 Assen became the capitol of the provence 'Drenthe'.

The local hero of Assen is 'Bartje' who is boy that figures in national known books of Anne de Vries, writer. His most famous sentence 'Ik bid niet voor bruine bonen' ('I don't pray for brown beans', because he didn't liked them), is known by the dutch for different generations.

Most people know Assen of it's famous Moto GP race, the TT (tourist trophy) of Assen. The worlds bests motor racers find the circuit of Assen, the TT the most challenged. People like Rossi and Hayden won here races.

In Assen you find the "Drents Museum", a museum with a big collection of soil finds from the pre history and the Roman times. They have interesting exhibitions too.
