Assembly Nov 08, 2009
Assembly is a bar that does food, just off Potterow in Edinburgh. Potterow is the heart of the George Square area of the University of Edinburgh (mainly the social science, arts and infomatics buildings and the music school), and Assembly is priced accordingly; all food costs less than five pounds at the time of writing, and that includes burger and chips.

The bar is nicely decorated, although it does err on the side of the ubiquitous “leather cubes and weird wooden screen” thing. There are also animations projected behind the bar and the music is the sort of lounge-electronica-weird-bleeping-noise stuff that again, seems all the rage in the city. Perfectly pleasant, although occasionally a little strange.

The food is very nice, especially considering how cheap it is. There are a selection of burgers, sandwiches and light bites that are in the general direction of tapas. I had Thai Fishcakes, mozzarella bites and spicy fries, and they were all very nice. Service is prompt and very friendly, and they don’t even make you go to the bar to order your drinks. A service charge is added to tables of more than five but you can insist on taking it off again, and at least it saves you from having to argue the toss about who is paying how much of the tip. Eight of us ate, nearly all of us had soft drinks and two courses, and some people had a coffee – the bill came to about twelve pounds each.

I would imagine that this becomes a sort of hang out for posher students at night, and may get crowded. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn’t hard to find a seat at all, but it is probably a different issue on a Saturday night. The location would be pretty central for events in Potterow or Teviot Student Unions, the National Museum of Scotland, Old College or Talbot Rice art gallery, and actually if you were going to something at the Festival Theatre or Grayfriars Kirk you’d be pretty close too.

Day in Edinburgh
On December 3rd, Lorina and I finally went on our first major trip to Edinburgh. It rained, as always  (did we really expect anything else???). This trip like all our trips didn’t st…assembled at Edinburgh. To conclude the day we ate at a delicious Mexican restaurant (apparently the best in Edinburgh). Edinburgh
