Great for families and couples! Mar 22, 2008
The Assateague lighthouse is one of the oldest operating lighthouses on the East Coast. My girlfriend and I made it a point to come down and see this lighthouse (We love lighthouses) and overall it's a GREAT photo op. They also have placards all around the base documenting the history of the lighthouse.

If you're coming during the summer months, bring insect repellent as the island is notorious for its mosquitoes.

As long as your here, take a trip to the National Sea Shore and dip in the water, then hit some more hiking trails! If you go to the MD side of the island, there are wild horses just wandering around and some will even come up to your car!

All in all, my girlfriend loved it. It has a real low excitement factor, but as far as just being pretty cool, this is where it's at. Also, there is no parking, you have to walk to this. Park at the lighthouse trail and walk to it!

Assateague Island Lighthouse Jul 20, 2008
now this light is located in the middle of a national wildlife refuge where you can see all kinds of water fowl, migrating birds and free roaming horses. it was 1st built in 1833 and rebuilt in 1867, stands 142 feet high and its base is 27 feet and 15 feet at the top. the brick tower has 2 1000 watt lamps that double flash every 5 seconds to warn ships of treacherous shoals that lie off the barrier islands.

the lighthouse is located on the VA side of Assateague island, a windswept barrier island that serves as the chincoteague national wildlife refuge.
