Assateague Island National Seashore is located just a few miles south of Ocean City, Maryland.
The Island is very narrow with inland pine forest, salt marshes and 37 miles of Atlantic Ocean beach.
There are more than 300 wild ponies wandering the marshes and stands of pine trees, along with Whitetail Deer, Sika Deer and over 300 species of migratory and resident birds and waterfowl. Assateague Island became a National Park in 1965, and together with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Refuge and State Park, the land and water boundaries of Assateague Island total over 48,000 acres in Maryland and Virginia.
