The Roman theatre in Aspendos, good day-trip with Perge Jul 23, 2011
The Aspendos Theatre is a good place if you plan a day-trip somewhere around Antalya. Its a little outside, so from Antalya you need to drive approx. 30 minutes to get there. You have different ways to reach it, you could either book a tour over some tourist organization where you go with many other people or you just take one of the so called "Kültür Taxis". Those are actually normal Taxis that take you to sightseeing spots for a fix pre-defined price, wait for you and bring you back. To us it seemed the best way cause it isnt more expensive than an organized tour by your travel company or hotel and you can do what you want. You should pay the price not until you are back at your hotel, or maybe half/half.

Everything worked well, the driver even spoke german (as so many people over there) and we had a great stay at Aspendos Theatre and Perge later on.

The Theatre is impressive - maybe not as much as the one in rome, but it's in the same roman style. You can take some cool picutes in there and walk everywhere, even through little tunnel-systems inside.

Afterwards you can go up to the hill behind it from where you can look inside the theatre which is again another cool view. Up there you'll find some other ruins, for example the old basilika of Aspendos. And although there are lots of people in the theatre, it seemed as nobody wanted to climb up there, so we were very alone. But dont miss it, you should go up!

After almost 2 hours we went back to our Taxi and drove to Perge. But thats another story :)

Amphittheater brought back to life Aug 30, 2009
Aspendos is an antik city in southern Turkey, about 45 km east of Antalya. The city has suppposedly been build in the 12th century B.C., but has not been dug up yet. So, when people talk about Aspendos they are actually referring to the erect and visible buildings (or rather their ruins) which are all from the roman era around 2. and 3. century A.D. when Aspendos was an important city in the trade in Pamphylia. The city and the adjacent buildings are fairly spread though and if you are into climbing... it can take a few hours, to explore the whole area.

The theater itself is one of the best intact ones of the antik. It is still used for plays, operas and even for German TV Shows. It is undescribeable to sit under the stars on marble that is 1700 years old and listen to an opera....
