Ashton Great House & Hotel Black River Reviews
A super calm place wher you really can get away from it all May 02, 2011
The Ashton Great House & Hotel is situated some 3 km north of Black River on a hill top overlooking the stunning plains of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The main house dates back some 200 years and you have the fantastic old look and feel to it; when you walk the squeaky waxed wooden floor or stairs it sound almost that someone is following you – and maybe there is! The view from the balcony is nothing but mind blowing and especially when the sun is going down and shines on the clouds; this is simply magnificent.
When you sit and enjoy this scenery; by the way don't lit the light on the balcony it draws loads of mosquitoes. There is a fairly amount rat-bats that fly out from under the roof just before the sundown and if you can stand the mosquito attacks you are in for a treat.
I could understand from my talks with Verna the manager that it is a place that isn’t that much visited even in the high season. It is truly a place where you should go if you need to get away from everything except the wonderful scenery around the house.
The mornings are filled with the sound of hen cocks competing in alarm signals and there are also quite a lot of bulls fighting over the cows in making the most impressive roaring. You are completely surrounded by nature and all kind of birds are having their morning songs as well. I have never been at a savannah but the sound of feel from this is the closed I could imagine.
All around the hill you have the farm which is the base of this property. The hotel is just a side business for the owner that lives in a smaller house just next to the hill.
There is a palm tree and mango tree alley leading up to the house on the hill.
The rooms in the main building are quite nice also in size. You have an extremely noisy air condition in each room but putting it on fan is a good advice in order to sleep. To me the air condition sounded like I was sleeping next to the roaring sea so at 3 am I closed it off totally.
The bathroom is really small but it has the basics; a toilet, a sink and a shower.
The staffs are truly pleasant all of them; the "the mama manager" runs the house with cooking and taking care of the house together with some housekeepers and a couple of gardeners; while a young guy is the caretaker at night and he he was quite difficult to understand with his perfect Jamaican language.
We had two dinners at the premises; both were served in the dining room in the main house. There is a possibility to eat outside as well if you want. If you want to have a bottle of wine to the dinner you can bring it yourself; there is no wine in the restaurant. They mostly serve water and beers. You have a okay menu variation but all dish is to order in advance, so you have to book what you want ad at what time.
