The journey to Israel appealed to me for reason far less pious than I, sometimes, am willing to concede. Most simply: I went to reunite with a dear friend who had, by equal parts choice and chance, settled there. After eight years apart from her, I took the plunge. And it was, rewarding beyond measure, to our friendship, and,to me as Christian.

Om 4.30 uur ging de wekker. Wat een onmogelijke tijd isdat maar wat moet je anders als je om 5.55 uur op het busstation moet zijn. We hadden de vorige avond al een ontbijtpakket gehad en dat lieten we ons goed smaken. Om 5.30 uur hadden we een taxi besteld die ons naar het busstation bracht. Hier stapten we op de bus naar Ashkelon. Onderweg werd Ellen nog een beetje beroerd en moesten we de buschauffeur vragen of hij even wilde stoppen. Het ging al gauw een stuk beter met haard dus konden we...
