A month in a hostel Aug 11, 2011
The Ashanti lodge is a newly renovated hostel. They installed new beds, painted the building, etc. It is quiet in winter times, when they have a winter special discount, and gets more busy in other times of the year. The location is excellent, being in the Gardens just next to the Company Gardens, and walking distance from Longstreet (but not the noise). Very friendly staff. A good place to crash while you explore all the great places of Cape Town!

Ashanti Sep 01, 2010
Ashanti Lodge is located a few blocks off Long Street where all the action is, so you have to walk a bit to get to the pubs and restaurants.

It's also more expensive than most of the other hostels on Long Street for some reason, despite being further away from the action.

There is a key code gate and the rooms have codes as well that you have to input, so security seemed pretty good.

The receptionist spent over an hour trying to sort out the reservation (overland truck group, so about 15 people) so can't say that was very efficient, though I doubt it was her fault so much as it was the fault of the reservation system in place.

The bar area looks towards Table Mountain, which is cool. The travel agency is far more expensive than other places on Long Street.

Example: Shark cage diving was quoted at over 1600 rand. On Long Street, it could be found for 995. HUGE difference! So wouldn't use the travel agency.

In all, it was alright but I don't think it was good value for the money due to location and being pricier than other places, as well as the pricey tour agency.

Affordable and central Oct 04, 2009
The Ashanti Lodge is a combination of a hostel, hotel and travel agency. The place has several different types of accommodation: camping, 6 and 8 bed dorms, single/double rooms with shared facilities and double/twin/triple en-suite rooms.

The en-suite rooms are located in separate guest houses, making them a wonderful quiet budget hotel option.

Amenities include a pool, bar, restaurant, internet and travel agency offering anything from day-trips to complete overland adventures.

The lodge is located in Gardens, next to the De Waal park, just around the corner from Kloof Street. This makes the Ashanti Lodge an excellent base to explore Cape Town from.

Hi..... I am so happy you shared this great place! It looks different than the name... "lodge" sounds more rustic to me than the actual pictures show. Great pictures to show how wonderful this place is! sylvia

A Hostel With A View Jan 07, 2009
Arriving at this hostel would make the average shabby dressed backpacker think that they have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way. When the girl at reception finally reassured me that this Afro-Victorian mansion was indeed a hostel, we checked in.

The dorm rooms are not all that much to talk about. The bar area is really good. The bar staff were all very friendly in the evenings and the pool table gave rise to plenty of opportunities for fun.

The highlight of the hostel is of course its legendary toilet on the top floor that faces Table Mountain. The toilet has been raised to afford a better view and should you wish there is a set of binoculars should you wish. Personally I passed up the chance to use the binoculars as I can only imagine people dont wash their hands beforehand.

It loses a star mostly due to the unfriendliness of the staff except for the girls working the bar in the evenings.

Vibrant backpackers in the heart of Cape Town. Oct 06, 2008
If anyone is heading to Cape Town and looking for a Vibrant backpacking hostel that offers great value for money and has excellent facilities then Ashanti Lodge get's the thumbs up. it has a swimming pool, internet access, commuial kitchen, garden, bbq facilities, tv lounge, laundry service, airport pick up service, money exchange, pool table, camping facilities etc.

It's also in a fantastic location at the foot of table mountain which has some magnificent views, a 10 minute walk from Long Street which hosts a number of bars, clubs and restaurants. The cost is quite modest while sharing a dorm you will be paying 130R (£8.70) per night, a single is 250R (16.75) and you have the option of camping in the garden which will set you back 70R (£4.70).

As of an evening the bar and balcony start to pack up with with backpackers starting to socialize and exchange plans for the duration of the trip. Next time i'm in Cape Town I will 100% go back.

At the foot ofA Table Mountain Nov 30, 2008
The last 4 days of our trip in SA we staid in the Ashanti Lodge in Capetown and I can describe it in one word : superb !

Why ? Well first of all : Table Mountain is nearby, Long Street (for shopping or restaurants etc.) is a 10 min. walk, Waterfront is a 10 min. drive so the location is perfect.

At the lodge you can book trips, swim in the pool, drinks at the bar, eat your breakfast for real cheapass money or relax in your room.

They've got 2 seperate monumental houses with suites in it (that's where we staid in) but if you go for saving money you can also stay in the dorms inside the Ashanti Lodge

Rest me to say : fun people, nice & clean and the place to stay if you're in Capetown !!
