Located on the west side of Hudson Bay, Arviat is considered to be the 2nd or 3rd largest community in the territory of Nunavut. Although only a 35 minute turboprop plane ride north of Churchill Manitoba, Arviat is located in the tundra so no trees are present.

The 2000+ inhabitants are dominantly Inuit with the major sources of employment being local stores and the government. The unemployment rate is high but people are very friendly to strangers. In Arviat you will hear quite a bit of Inuktitut spoken although English is understood by everyone except some elders.

Traditional Inuit activities such as carving (mosty caribou antler), sewing of wall hangings and traditional clothing, dog sledding, hunting and fishing, drum dancing and throat singing are typical activities one can experience in the community.

There is not a thriving tourist industry in Arviat so facilities are limited and people will find the cost of most goods are quite expensive.

But for a unique cultural experience in an Inuit community, Arviat is worth a visit.
