What the hell was I thinking?

Despite initial equipment failure, constipation and self-doubt, all of which I overcame, this low-lander made it to the Summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!  For the curious, that is 5895 meters, or about 19,340 feet, a bit higher than Everest base camp…

We raced to the Air Tanzania office first thing in the morning to see if there was a bus to the airport for our mid-morning flight. They told us the next flight wasn't until Saturday and it was only Wednesday. Their agent in Dar had booked us on a flight that didn't exist. Had we known, we …

We somehow managed NOT to book a safari trip in Dar, as we wanted to check out the agencies once we got to Arusha ourselves. Turned out to be a good move. But first things first! It was one h*** of a busride to get there! It's quite a few hours, if I remember right it was 8. So, unsure of whe…

Tanzania 1992

*** under construction *** In 1992 I spent four weeks in Kenya + Tanzania - two of them with a freind of mine who was working in Rwanda in those days. Big drawback: I was being mugged on the day of my arrival in Nairobi. Camera, big tele lenses - all gone. Fortunately my friend had brought his camera, too. No tele lenses, though, but at least I could take some pictures. And I had more time to watch what I saw! :-D

So, in my brief moment of stable internet service, I wish to report that both Chris and I made our way to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Summit day was insane.  We woke up at midnight to start what ended up being an over sever hour trek to the top through straightline winds and cold.&nbs…
