Arusha Backpackers Hostel Reviews
Small rooms, big price Aug 10, 2009
Comparitavely expensive hostel, little value for money. Bare in mind that I am speaking as a traveller on a budget!
The twin room was absolutely tiny- nothing special here. Shared toilets/showers with several other rooms in the block.
The bathroom facilities themselves were better than most I've experienced in Tanzania.
Where the hostel really stands out is the beautiful bar/restaurant area located on the top floor. It is open air and has some great views. The food tastes good although you won't get much value for money- a chicken curry will only have 3 or 4 small pieces of chicken in it, for example. Bar prices are at the high end of Tanzanian prices, with beers costing TSH 2500 (the cheaper places are TSH 1300).
General atmosphere of the bar area, particularly in the late evening, is that it is a nice, quiet, relaxing place to have a few beers. Brilliant.
Breakfast is included. On your plate is an odd mixture of chips, kidney beans and pancake- not the best thing to scoff down when you have a 4:00 AM start!
Oh, this place does the best toast in the world.
There is internet access available- apparently it is free to people staying at the hostel (according to the website). This was not made clear to me when I stayed there so I did not get a chance to use the computers, but they looked comparitavely modern.
I would stay here again, if only for the cool bar area (sit down in the corner on your far left as you go up the stairs). Everything else is overpriced considering what you get, but I just like the atmosphere.
