Arts Museum was founded in 1805. Now in contains 25 halls where you can visit a variety of exhibitions. About 250 works are on permanent display. Today, the funds of Kharkiv Arts Museum include about 25,000 exhibits: Western European exhibits, Ukrainian exhibits, Russian painting, graphics, sculpture, arts and crafts belonging to the 15th – 21st centuries.

The superb mansion that houses the museum was designed by Architect Beketov in 1913. It belonged to Ivan Ignatishchev, a brewery owner, an Honorary citizen of Kharkiv. The facade is an amazing example of the combination of artistic techniques of Renaissance and Art Nouveau. Its strict proportions are in harmony with the original stucco and decorated pottery. The architect used favorite theme of Greek classics in the interior.

As our guide explained to us, the museum repeatedly changed its names throughout its history. At first, it was called "The City Arts and Industry Museum". Later it turned out that the museum's collection were not devoted to the industry, but to the arts. In 1920, it was renamed into "Church History Museum". In 1922, it became "The Ukrainian Arts Museum". From 1949 to 1965, the museum was called "The National Fine Arts Museum". Soon, they choose the final name of that wonderful museum: Kharkiv Arts Museum.
