A palette able option Dec 28, 2016
This should rank up there with the most colorful drives one has ever taken. Artist’s Drive is a Death Valley attraction which is very relaxed and easy to enjoy: just cruise the nine-mile circuit. A one-way drive with no charges or fees, entrance to the site is perhaps twenty minutes south of Furnace Creek.

What you pass by is a riot of colorful rocks. Though a laid back venture, the landscape was born of a very violent past. Artist’s Drive sits in the heart of ancient volcanic activity, which spewed great quantities of raw material for nature to have her way with. The layer of volcanic debris is estimated to be an incredible 5,000 feet thick here, containing a great variety of metals and micas. Over the eons oxidation and weathering culled a diverse bloom of pigmentation, leaving behind a splendid landscape.

The majority of the roadway twists and winds past nondescript piles of brownish rock. Artist’s Palette is the most intense vista, near the end. Here you park and walk a very short way to take in the splendor. Although the Park has provided great space to pull off, we still had some difficulty finding parking due to the tourist masses. Rather than make a poor attempt at describing this beauty, I will simply let the pictures do the talking. This is accessible beauty, not to be missed during your visit to Death Valley National Park.

As pleasant as Artist’s Drive is, there are no rest rooms or any other facilities for the duration. I found Death Valley National Park to be exceptionally well provisioned everywhere else and while it certainly is not a life-or-death matter, just a heads up because the reversal of fortune might catch one off guard.
Here we are --- shall we???
