Art Basel Feb 10, 2013
Art Basel is a four day full-on art extravaganza. Many claim that this is the art festival to end all art festivals and I must concur. Hundreds of the most prominent galleries come from across the globe to sell or flaunt their intrinsic superiority. Works range in medium and period; some of the earliest daguerreotypes to 21st century large-scale installation pieces (constructed specifically for this show), Impressionism to Post-Modernism (and arguably Post-Post-Modernism (Popomo).

In a certain sense entering Art Basel is like entering one of the more prominent art museums in the world, with the exception that virtually everything is for sale. For ninety-nine percent of the visitors coming to the show however, this is merely a sensory indulgence. Works of masters like Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Diane Arbus, Joseph Beuys, Hiroshi Sugimoto, may be priced at $500,000 to $100,000,000. The sheer quantity of works presented in the four short days is overwhelming and is impossible to absorb fully, but in this respect, Art Basel is not a museum. You go to become overwhelmed.
