Art Basel 2012 Dec 17, 2012
Art Basel was on the level of previous years, but with more "satellite" festivals. The most interesting art was not shown in the Convention center where Art Basel is, but actually in the Scope, Art Miami and Pulse.

This year festivals decided to earn lots of money by charging insane amounts at the gates... Art Basel cost was 42$ per day, and range for other 10 best festivals was between 15 and 25$ per day. It would be fine to pay that money if you are visiting museums around lets say Berlin or London, but for festivals that already charged galleries to represent their art and sell it to visitors... that is not cool. They obviously want to see only people that can buy art, and rest is not welcome...

Aside of the price, this festivals are still the highlight of the year in Miami, bar none.

Four days of different Miami Dec 07, 2011
Art Basel Miami is a festival that is happening in Miami Beach for past 10 years. It is always during the first week of December, and it last four days.

Main event is held in Miami Beach Convention Center, but that event is geared towards extremely rich collectors and art is rather boring. It is worth seeing it, because it is around 300 biggest galleries from around the world, but many more interesting festivals are running at the same time, such as Scope (excellent variety of art and must see), Art Asia (very progressive, great art from Asia), Pulse (upcoming artist, very good), Art Miami (mix and match, used to be mostly Latino Art, very good this year), Red Dot (not really worth seeing), Nada (very good) and Miami Art (interesting exhibitions). It is pity that every one of this festivals charges 15-35$ per ticket to go in, especially because artist also have to pay good money to participate.

Aside of this named festivals, there is lots and lots of warehouses, galleries and artist coops all over the town, but mainly in area called Wynwood art district. That area is most important due to really great art made by hungry artist wanting to show what they can do.
