Lift Bridge Nov 06, 2013
Duluth Minnesota is a very pretty place to the summer. If you like winters with blowing wind gusts of 45 MPH and temperature below zero, you might like it during the winter. The bridge is a something to see. They raise and lower it for boats to go through. You can watch it go up and down and waive at the people on the boats. Canal park is full of restaurants and shopping with plenty of choices of hotels in the area. sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Hwy 61 to Canada. Follows the lake…

The only Ariel Lift Bridge in the United States Jun 17, 2008
The Ariel Lift Bridge began life as an extremely rare transporter bridge—the first of just two such bridges ever constructed in the United States in 1905. The bridge was upgraded in 1929–30 to the current lifting design and continues to operate today.

When you drive into Duluth you see the power of the bridge from far away... I knew about it before I got there but it captivated me even more to be able to see this structure that is over 100 years old and how it made an impact on the history of the town.

The bridge if fully available to walk and drive across (except for when a boat is going under). Which I was sort of saddened on because I thought that it would lift up with the cars and people on it because it's not a draw bridge. But I was wrong. Gates go down (like gates that warn about trains coming) to ward people off the bridge, then a couple minutes later the boat passes through. This can be done for very large boats where the lift gets lifted up to the top of the bridge, or for smaller, private boats where the bridge will lift up half way to allow the small boat to pass through.

When the large ship passed through someone spoke on the loud speaker to tell the bystanders what the purpose of the ship was and the history of the ship. Which I thought was pretty cool... they didn't do the same thing for the smaller boat... which can be understandable.
