The city of Arica is the most northern city of Chile, and is at 19 km. from the border with Peru and at 195 km. from the border with Bolivia.
It is a city located at the foot of a hill named "The Morro" and is an oasis in the northern Chilean desert. This city has several beaches that are normally enjoyed by tourists from Bolivia by the proximity of this picturesque city, whose activity is around its pedestrian street "the May 21", which has restaurants, pubs and trade around them. The city has good hotels and one Casino has a lot to prove. Other attractions are its cathedral, which was built by Eiffel, and the Azapa Valley which is the beginning of this Oasis named "The city of eternal spring".

We arrived safely at our Hostel in Arica. Our first impressions of the Jardin Del Sol was that it was a bit like the rooms out of the hit BBC "comedy" Hi-Di-Hi, but it is fine! Our first impressions of Arica are a bit like a cross between Torquay and Porthcawl - a bit of a scruffy seaside town, but it does have some very nice looking apartments and is very more "European" in appearance than anywhere we visited in Peru (not that is necessarily a good thing!).

Not long after leaving Arequipa the road descends quickly and you are soon in the middle of a landscape similar to what Mars must look like. There are large mountains covered in sand with red rocks protruding and just vast stretches of nothingness. The road proceeds south without many signs of civilization until the town of Moquegua, a bit east off the main road south towards Chile. Even there, the town is little more than a small patch of life. Continuing onward, the vast expanses of sandy d...

Hello All,Yesterday afternoon was very nice. The weather in Lima was perfect, all the way up to 80 with light clouds. I checked out of the hotel around noon, and took a taxi to the center of the city. The taxi cost about $2.50, and was hampered by some pretty fierce traffic the closer we got to downtown. The Plaza Mayor was completely blocked off, and I'm sure that had something to do with it. I was dropped off 2 blocks away, and headed in. The Plaza was a pretty typical Latin American pl...
