Arica and the trip to Nacional Parque Nacional Lauca
posted by:

We arrived safely at our Hostel in Arica.  Our first impressions of the Jardin Del Sol was that it was a bit like the rooms out of the hit BBC "comedy" Hi-Di-Hi, but it is fine!  Our first impressions of Arica are a bit like a cross between Torquay and Porthcawl - a bit of a scruffy seaside town, but it does have some very nice looking apartments and is very more "European" in appearance than anywhere we visited in Peru (not that is necessarily a good thing!). We booked our tour to...

Crossing From Peru into Chile
posted by:
Dec 06, 2007 - Aug 07, 2008
Not long after leaving Arequipa the road descends quickly and you are soon in the middle of a landscape similar to what Mars must look like. There are large mountains covered in sand with red rocks protruding and just vast stretches of nothingness. The road proceeds south without many signs of civilization until the town of Moquegua, a bit east off the main road south towards Chile. Even there, the town is little more than a small patch of life. Continuing onward, the vast expanses of sandy d...

Lima, Peru -› Arica, Chile -› ...
Hello All,Yesterday afternoon was very nice. The weather in Lima was perfect, all the way up to 80 with light clouds. I checked out of the hotel around noon, and took a taxi to the center of the city. The taxi cost about $2.50, and was hampered by some pretty fierce traffic the closer we got to downtown. The Plaza Mayor was completely blocked off, and I'm sure that had something to do with it. I was dropped off 2 blocks away, and headed in. The Plaza was a pretty typical Latin American pl...

Thoughts on Peru
posted by:
Dec 07, 2007 - Apr 28, 2008
Ok.. so now that we are in Chile.. I have been reflecting on what I thought of Peru.. There is definetly a difference.. We noticed the difference right at the border.. The Chiliean people were dressed nicely to begin with.. You can tell they have more money for clothing and jewelery etc. So, here we go.. 1. Peru.. TAXI´S TAXI TAXI! Everywhere are these little Ford Rabbit looking vehicles they use for taxis. Of course.. Get two passengers and some backpack´s in there and we are bottomi...

Beach!
posted by:
Jul 18, 2007 - Dec 18, 2007
Today I spent a semi-relaxing day on the beach. Unfortunately it was very very windy, so it wasn't the most comfortable beach ever. However, the water was rather warm for the Pacific and the sun was strong. The city isn't particularly pretty as it's completely surround by big sand dunes, but the downtown has a lot of affordable restaurants and some cute paseo peatonales with lots of artesanias and food stands.

We started our 3 weeks trip with a 27 hour bus trip from Santiago to Arica. From there, we took a private tour to the National Park Lauca & N.P de la Vicuna's, down to Iquique. After visiting the port of Antofagasta, we headed for San Pedro de Atacama and visited the famous Valle de la Luna and Tatio Geysers. In our last week we headed back via La Serena to Santiago.

Arrived bright and early in Arica and booked straight onto the next bus to La Paz. Got a newspaper and learnt that an earthquake had hit Peru and there was a Tsunami alert along the Peru and Chile coastline.

Toronto, Canada -› Lima, Peru -› ...
Night bus time!  As I wait for the bus to arrive, all I'm thinking to myself is, "Please, please don't let the passenger beside me be a woman carrying two kids".  Kids, after all, ride free on their parent's lap in Peru and Bolivia, and I've seen some sizeable kids get free rides.  The miracle, however, is how the parents' legs don't fall asleep carrying their hefty little ones. This is Chile though, so I'm hoping the rules are different.  Thankfully though, all I get is a ...
