Beautiful mosaics Apr 10, 2011
The Arian Baptistery was constructed in the latter half of the fifth century, or early half of the sixth century, and should not be confused with the Baptistery of Neon! This octagonal shaped baptistery contains some wonderful mosaics and is said to have sunk from ground level, though I couldn’t see the difference! The mosaics depict Christ being baptised in the Jordan by John the Baptist, and include the twelve apostles around them. The colours and vividness are still amazing, especially when you consider how old they are. In the middle of the building, there is some structure, which may have been used for the baptisms but I am not sure. If you are in Ravenna, there is a fee of a few Euros for this sight, but you can buy various tickets which allow you to see Ravenna’s other sights at a slightly discounted rate. If you opt for the ticket, go see this!
