Buenos Aires - September 19-25

Better late than never right? I finally finished processing my Buenos Aires photos, which became greatly delayed due to my European cruise that followed close on the heels. I had time on that trip to finish working on these so, without further ado, here you go.Since it has been so long, and I know most of you just look at the photos anyway, I will leave out my blow by blow of what I did. Here is the summary of my photo exploits. What you are seeing here are two cathedrals, the Recolata and St ...

Arrival in BA

Yesterday we took advantage of what time we had left at Iguazu and went back to the national park. It was well worth the second visit as there were more trails there to explore and sights to see. This time we took the Gran Aventura tour, which involved a 4X4 guided tour through the rainforest, followed by a boat trip around the central island of the falls and into(!) some of the waterfalls themselves. We ended up getting soaked, but in the blistering heat and humidity, we were quickly dr...

Every Sunday in San Telmo, one of the very oldest barrios in Buenos Aires and close to downtown, there's a huge street fair on Calle Defensa that runs from Avenida Belgrano all the way to Plaza Dorrego. It's famous for the antiques sold there, but there's also a huge number of amazing street musicians and performers, as well as all sorts of artisans selling their crafts. Now that the weather is finally a little warmer the fair is so much better. The energy from the musicians and the crowd ...

Salta

Sep 22, 2007 - Jan 11, 2008
After a long old journey from Calama and our arrival in Salta, we eventually made it to our original choice of hostel (after the disaster of staying in a total dump the night before!).  Salta is know to have one of the most beautful examples of colonial architecture in Argentina, although in truth it wasn´t very different to many of the places that we saw in Peru. We took the Cable-car up to the highest point of the City, which gave fantastic views of the area.  In one direction t...

Let's see, I moved in to the residence on the 4th, and it is now the what 19th. Well I have done alot in that time, mainly a lot of drinking...but it was all necessary to do. I have a wonderful roommate, her name is Elise and she's from Tennessee...actually there are quite a few people from my program from the South, it's very interesting. But sometimes I get confused as to the things they talk about because we don't have that over in San Diego. Oh well though! Okay then, the 4th I moved in t...

I got out of bed today at 3:00 in the afternoon. Never in my life have I done such a thing. It`s official. I`ve blended into my surroundings. I`ve been hanging with my Argentine friends a good bit lately. The entire time I speak castellano. I think my level has advanced double in the past two weeks because everywhere I go, I meet people and have to speak in Spanish. I can`t be shy any longer. I also finally gave in to the eating habits down here. I eat a tiny little lunch now at about ...

The border crossings are a breeze with the budget expeditions tour so I still have all of my stuff after crossing from Peru to Argentina.  The road was long and rough to get to Salta with a night of free camping along the way.  Salta had a much more urban and modern fell to it than any of my previous South America stops.  The bustling shopping centers were filled with locals picking up legitimate brand name clothing typical of western culture. Our campsite had the biggest...

Tomorrow we are leaving for a new adventure, one that I am honestly very excited about. We are leaving for Florianopolis Brazil which from what I have gathered so far is a much slower-paced city in Southern Brazil. It is an island off the southern coast of Brazil, and is the capital of Santa Caterina. Although in Atlanta I consider myself a "city girl" I have come to the conclusion that I am not as much of a big city girl as I thought. I have decided that to conisder yourself a "city person" ...

So, I had the deep desire to travel to Iguazu Falls, but none of my friends in Buenos Aires could join me.  Being the adventurous spirit that I am, I decided it was time to finally take my 1st solo trip.  I bought a plane ticket and booked a hotel in Puerto Iguazu for 3 days.  Within my first few hours in Puerto Iguazu I immediately made friends with 2 other solo travelers!  We spent the next 3 days together and then even some more time with each other when we ...

I'm ready(estoy lista). I can feel that it's time for me to come home. I have definitely enjoyed my time spent here, but I'm ready to see some familiar faces. I think that for my first trip abroad that this was the perfect length. I just got used to everything. I know where I am, what I like here, where I like to go and do, and I feel like I got a taste for the culture. I'd like to stay longer to learn more, but I'll save that for a return trip ;). I think I could have done things differently...

Arrival in Argentina - looking forward to wine and steak

So today my Aussie friends and I took the 173 bus out to the wine country outside of Mendoza to go and tour the local wineries.  Apparently about 70% of all Argentinian wine is made in this area of the country.  When we got out there we rented a couple bikes from Mrs. Coca, a nice old lady and her husband for 10 Pesos each for the day.  At our first destination we met Julian, the owner of Viñas Maria, a Malbec vineyard.  He showed us around his 4.5 Hectar property then ...

Soccer deserves its own entry in this blog.  I was in search for a soccer team to adopt in South America.  These decisions cannot be taken lightly.  They involve careful consideration of stadiums, traditions, uniform colors, supporters, riots, and some measure of on-field performance.  But to be clear, once I choose a team, I will not waiver from that choice.  If they get relegated to 2nd division (as my Spanish team of choice Real Betis has done before and will do ag...

Today while out and about, we stumbled onto Tierra Santa and I was thrilled as this religious themepark was on my list! We stopped to chat with the sheppard and their sheep. It was closed so we took photos from the fence, really that was close enough. For lunch I tried the typical blood sausage and well not so much. But I tried. Here its called morcilla. The other day at a French restaurant we ate Mollejas or "sweet bread" which my room mate informs me that on the farm she grew up on in NZ, th...

The bus ride from Santiago to Mendoza was quite spectacular - up into and through the Andes. We could see the ski lifts from the ski resorts, idling above the dry land (only barely sprinkled with snow). Border crossing was relatively easy, and our bags didn´t even get checked. Tash and I decided 10 blocks was nothing so we walked from the bus terminal in Mendoza to our hostel, Hostel Lagares, which turned out to be a bit of a chore, and this was after we figured out the right direction to wa...
