Ardastra Gardens and Zoo a lovely little zoo! Mar 21, 2008
My favorite day on a cruise was spent on my own at the zoo. I didn't pay for a tour or taxi there, just asked the locals directions to the bus stop and picked up the Jitney bus. I think it cost $1 or $2. The bus won't move till it's full however. We took the bus to Arawak Cay/The Fish fry as the locals call it.

It's a lovely area where the locals dine, very laid back open air restaurants, way better prices on sea food then downtown, not crowded or toursity when I was there. It's pretty too reminds me of Key West colorful little eatery's on the water. A local girl on the bus who got off at our stop even walked us there as she worked at one of the sea food places. She was so nice we decided to eat at the place she worked at. I had a Conch salad it was very tasty.

We then followed the signs as they say to the Zoo, it seemed far at first but was not it was a nice walk in the sunshine. The zoo is lovely you can see the famous Trained Flamingos show, the Flamingos march around it's very cool. You can actually feed the lory parrots, small colorful birds. Check the web sites ahead of time for times of Flamingo Show and Bird Feedings.

The zoo is small but clean with pretty tropical plants everywhere. You can get very close to the animals but use caution as small children can put their hands inside the cages and get bitten if not supervised by parents. We also took photos with a large Macaw and Cockatiel, the zoo just asks for a donation for this, please be generous as the money helps to care for the animals. When we were ready to leave we decided to take a taxi back so we would have more time to shop before boarding our crusie ship, the zoo staff even called us a cab and made sure we got in the right one. We still had ample time to shop downtown before boarding the ship. I spent less then on an excursion and got so much more!

Great review! I'm more into the "non-touristy" parts of places...much more laid back and less hassled. Thank you for the awesome advice...the dolphin swim is now on our list of things to do. :)

Much of the foliage that blocked the ocean views was removed to make way for seaside tees and greens, as well as 121 luxury homesites (all sold in a month) along the Atlantic Ocean and Nassau Harbor.
