L’Aquàrium de Barcelona is the most important marine leisure and education centre in the world concerning the Mediterranean. A series of 35 tanks, 11,000 animals and 450 different species, an underwater tunnel 80 metres long, six million litres of water and an immense Oceanarium, the only one in Europe, turn this centre into a unique, reference leisure show that has already been visited by more than 14 million people, and i was one of them.

The Qauarium opened on 8th September 1995, it has used state of the art technology to reproduce the different ambients is displayed as faithfully as possible. The displays that make it up are: a route around 21 tanks that show the marvels of the different marine communities of the Mediterranean sea (including the immense Oceanarium) and the colourful tropical seas; the Planeta Aqua display, and Explora!

One ticket costs you €.19,50 pro person.

It is totally overpriced. I have been to a couple of aquariums in my life and I was very disappointed.

The Barcelona aquarium is found on the maremagnum, an area on the port with a mall and cinema complex. While walking through this area it is very tempting to go inside. I have been here a couple times, and it is a good place to go with kids, but the entrance fee is 16 euro, so too expensive for student travelers or those on a tight budget.

Inside there are various tanks separated by region. Some Mediterranean and tropical waters. The best and most memorable part though, is the huge tank which you go through on a moving walkway. There is glass all around you and people just stand on the moving walkway as it slowly takes them through the tank. You get all views of the sharks, manta rays, and other curious fish as they swim over your head. You can take a look at the shark's "claspers" which have a whole explanation halfway through the ride.

At the end of this there is a kid area with trivia and games, unfortunately no touch pool (I was looking forward to that.)

There is a cafeteria inside but it is pricey for the hamburgers and hot dogs they give you, and while in Barcelona you must enjoy the good food so go somewhere else!
strange fish?
