This morning we ate breakfast at the Movenpick’s fantastic buffet, then headed over to Dive Aqaba, just down the street. We had booked ourselves on an all-day dive trip in the Red Sea. Very exciting! We walked in to Dive Aqaba and I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable. It felt good to be in the familiar surroundings of a dive shop and I was so excited to go diving! The owner, Ashraf, is an outgoing Jordanian (who calls everyone “mate”), and the crew appears to be a mix of Jordania...

Cairo, Egypt -› Aswan, Egypt -› ...
Hello Jordan!!  Wow – we love Jordan.  The people here are so friendly.  Baksheesh (tipping) isn’t as big as it is in Egypt and neither is the begging.  The country is beautiful and a lot cleaner than Egypt also.  We left Nuweiba on Sunday on the ferry.  The ferry cruises up the Gulf of Aqaba past Saudi Arabia and Israel and drops us off in Aqaba, our gateway to Jordan.  Aqaba is a biggish port with lots of shopes – even McDonalds (rarely seen in E...

Aqaba - Sand, sun, and scuba
posted by:

After crossing the border from Eilat, Israel into Jordan, we took a quick taxi into the heart of Aqaba.  Aqaba is a beautiful little city right on the Red Sea in the south of Jordan.  We booked a room in a lovely little budget hotel right on the sea, and crashed for an hour or so before it was time to scuba dive!  Mansour from Jordan Frogman swung by and picked us up, and we were off to his shop to try on scuba suits.  After going over the agenda and getting fitted, we hea...

Chilling in Aqaba

This afternoon I went out to see Aqaba. As most of the crew went already for the crew tour to Petra – I couldn’t go as I was working – I went out on my own. In the shuttle bus I met Roy, who was also on the Wind before and who is working in the pastry (good connection to have). First we were just walking around in Aqaba, until we both discovered that we are not interested in buying anything and that we wouldn’t need anything either. We spent the next 15 minutes to find a restroom, but...

Wadi rum

We were in port for a day and having been to Petra twice we went to Wadi Rum. It is in the south of Jordan near the Arabian desert. When you get to the Nat Park you transfer to 4 wheel drives. They take you through the dunes. It is quite a beautiful and very quiet place.

Slept in Friday morning, which was no big deal since Bait Ali doesn’t roll out their buffet breakfast until 8AM.  A common complaint throughout my Jordanian adventure was a failure to communicate, and Bait Ali is a prime example.  It took over a month to get  a response to repeated e-mails attempting to reserve a tent, and all they eventually conveyed was that we were ‘penciled in’.  After receiving this encouraging response I replied to inquire about hiking / c...

I set the location for Aqaba because it's kind of the halfway point of this day.....  apologies to any who stumble upon this page hoping to learn more about that city.....So, we woke up early and ate our last breakfast of banana pancakes and said goodbye to Feri and Hatem, who had gotten up early to say their farewells to us.   The cab came for us, and we were on our way.  Our driver took us to Nuweiba, and offered to take us all the way to the border but at that point we ...
