Apollo Bay offers pub grub Jan 31, 2016
S38°45.406' E143°40.163' on the Great Ocean Road, hordes of tourists need food and drink. Apollo Bay is a massive tourist restaurant. The reason this pub/bistro is called "hotel" dates back to the days that licenses only allowed pubs to provide alcohol to the traveling public. The presence of a few rooms (which might never be used) gave some impression that the rules being followed.
In December 2015, we ordered for lunch their traditional Caesar Salad with lettuce, bacon, garlic croutons, white anchovies, Caesar dressing, boiled egg and chicken for AUS$20. It was not too bad, but all ingredients, especially the chicken, came out of wholesale boxes. The dressing was from a big bottle too. No final flavour touches from the chef.
The 250g char-grilled steak burger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon, beetroot, caramelised onions & BBQ sauce on a sourdough bun with chips for AUS$18,50 was just a bit better than a burger from a fast food chain. Strangely, the burger lost a huge amount of water during eating. Was it partly made of industrial processed chicken meat?
Apollo Bay enticing street-front beer garden with big television screens may be the place to be in summer time, but we found their lunch options not enticing. Its fare is on the level of pub grub, which fills stomachs rather than excites taste buds.
