Wonderfully convenient for the ferry - Kökar Oct 05, 2010
Kökar (pronounced, so I am told something like Chirke with the 'e' barely pronounced) is more scenic in a conventional way than most of Åland. it has the typical lack of major contours but the cliffs are impressive and allow for some good walks. it makes a great stop between the main island and the Finnish mainland.

Anton's Gasthem was the only accommodation we knew about but anyway it is the nearest to the ferry - about 3 km according to the website. There is a clear map on the website but we did not have that advantage. The road from the ferry came to a T junction. There was nobody about and we had a 50% chance of being right. Left looked more as though it went somewhere so we took it -WRONG!

Fortunately it was not long before a car was coming towards us and I stopped it. Not only did the woman driver tell us we were going diametrically opposite to where we wanted - she gave us a lift to the gasthem, going a bit out of her way.

Anton was not about but his parents lived in the house shown on the website. The gasthem is on the other side of the drive with a number of self-catering rooms. We had not assumed we should be able to go out to eat and hence were able to cook up a meal. Breakfast is not provided but eggs or bacon could be bought at the house.

As numerous websites say (in my words!) the gasthem is not only the closest accommodation to the ferry but is easy for walking to the church (separate review) and around the cliffs.
