... it's my third week in Guatemala. I have to be really disciplined to keep going. Every place I've been to so far made me want to "settle down" for at least a month! I took a week of my first formal studies in Spanish in Xela (Quetzaltenango). Utatlan Spanish school is an excellent place for those who want to get training in conversational Spanish. They don't do any "push" marketing so it might be easy to overlook them. But the instructors are great - highly educated and very caring.…

Today Perla and drove to Guatemala City to vote. At least Perla did since I didn´t have my ID with me. After that we picked up some stuff at Perla´s uncle´s business and headed back to Antigua to meet the group for breakfast While we were at the city the rest of the group walked around the hotel. The place is very nice and the gardens are just incredible. Also we had a good view of the Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes. We did breakfast at the hotel. Most of us ordered the Desayuno tipico whi…

My first day in Antigua
posted by:
Dec 11, 2008 - Dec 27, 2008
Another free day in Antigua, I got up at 09.00 and not seeing anyone (as previously mentioned 3 had left early to go up Pacaya) I headed out for breakfast. I then strolled to the Central Park and wrote my thoughts on the past few days. For the rest of the day I lazed around the hotel reading my book in the courtyard of the hotel and in the Central Park. At 17.00 we met up for our included Salsa lesson... With some trepidation Anna, Eliza, Hariette, Karen, Agnethe, Martin and I took part, it w…

Ok, so first off, I uploaded a whack of photos today, and it's taken me all morning--remember that these are my digital camera photos, my P&S, so there will be better ones from my 35mm SLR when I get home and have the money to develop my film.  Sometimes the tourists are correct.  Sometimes they choose wisely.  I've been here in Antigua for 3 nights now, and it is wonderful.  I thought about going all around this area, up the hills, to the quaint villages, and have d…

Checked out of Black Cat and into Los Amigos II.  Nice lady, but I don't think I would stay there again (Q40).  Booked a shuttle to Panajachel (Q40) and then a trip to Vulcan Pacaya (Q80 + Q40 park entry fee).  This could be done for about $2 USD cheaper or as much as $50 that included food and all sorts of other bs with the top guides in town.  Probably nicer vans and guides that speak english as well as some food.  The drive from Antigua was about 1.5 hrs. …

Well San Pedro, it`s been great.  Amazing really, a fun-filled three months that I thought would never end.  (Wait, three months???)  Were did that time go exactly?  I like to think the rest of the world stood still for a while so we could take some free time in this lakeside paradise, but alas, it wasn`t so.  When the rent was up this time we left for Antigua, a place very different than what we had become used to.  People aren`t staying up past 1 here…
