Traveling is the most rewarding kind of stress!

Early in the morning I awoke to thousands of people chanting Catholic hymns in the streets.  Although I was jetlagged and would have liked to sleep a couple of more hours, I was very excited to see what was taking place.   Before we started our journey around the city, I had the hotel concierge call to the rental car company to inquire the where-a-bouts of my car.  The company informed me that there was no longer a car for me and that I should be thankful that they would not ...

Early morning around 5 am i picked up Tayler at his hotel in Zona 10 Guatemala city, Exactly Xamanec student inn, (i have a review about it), and we headed to Antigua guatemala, where we were gonna get our tour to the pacaya Volcano early that morning, we stopped by a gas station to get on food for the road and drinks. Adventure in Antigua

When we arrived at the hostel in Antigua we met the girls and unloaded our stuff.  Then we went out and got some coffee at a local cafe.  We took a tour of the local sites and learned about some of the colonial history. Then at 1430 we went and did one of most amazing things I have ever done.  We booked ourselves on the Volcan Pacaya tour.  We took a bus for about 90 minutes up a mountain, then got out and had a guide bring us another hour up the mountain to see the ...

Another long days journey

Unfortunately I knew it had to be coming and this morning we got served black beans for breakfast. I had to laugh when Terese ate them really fast to get them out of the way and Mercedes took this to mean she was really hungry and wanted more! Said goodbye to our families after breakfast and caught a minivan back to Antigua and to Casa En Familia where we had our first showers in 3 days...ahhh... Had a very lazy afternoon and dinner at Las Palmas again. Being Tuesday night it was ladies nigh...

Volcano Day!Couldnt get up early enough for the first tour(6am). Figured Id take my time and do some touring around the city anyways. There was a 2:30 tour for the volcano. I spent the day walking around the cobblestone streets taking pictures and gawking at church ruins. At 2:30 I hopped in a full private minivan. The funniest thing was that previous to arriving in Guatemala I had a friend here on travbuddy that offered to meet up w/ me and show me around his country a bit. His name was Juan....

well I cant say too much.I was in Antigua, Guatemala for 5 weeks to study spanish and travelling around the country on the weekends. The city is pretty small and I was a bit worried if I wouldn't get bored in 5 weeks, but in Antigua there's always something to do.visiting the market, hanging out at Parque Central, going out at night to La Casbah or Monoloco, watching a movie for free at Cafe 2000 or La Sin Ventura, doing volunteer work, enjoying the view from Cerro De La Cruz or taking Salsa C...

The City of Antigua Had a great dinner there at our hostel the first night.  I recommend the veggie baguette and a Gallo beer at the Black Cat www.blackcatantigua.com.  Then we took a stroll down the cobblestone streets.  It appears that our hostel is one of the few loud hot spots in town.  It was the party place until 10:30pm when everyone went to sleep.  We had hoped to meet up with TravBuddy DanChapman there, but missed each other.  Another good recommendat...

*This is a copy of a posting I put on myspace while on my trip to Guatemala and Honduras, November 07: It is 10:30 am here and I just finished breakfast - feeling lazy so thought I'd post about my volcano experience yesterday. So I have done tours in both Costa Rica and Belize and they were pretty disneyfied - everything felt pretty safe and organized. But this is Guatemala and things are different here..... I signed up for a hiking tour up volcano pacaya, about an hour and a half's ...

Of course on my last day I must have this experience! I went to the bathroom out in the garden and like every morning I had my shower! Not that I did not have any visitors in there before, but this one was very special and big one! I was finished with my shower, opened the curtain to get the towel and there it was, a nice creature sitting right next to it and my clothes! GREAT! What now? What is it? Does it jump, fly or even speak?! Okay, I should not start running around naked in the garden...

The Colonial City of Antigua

Early in the morning, we departed our hotel to make arrangement of our tours. If you used a taxi from Guatemala City to Antigua, it would cost you 30$ for one way or you have an option to use a shuttle bus that would approximately cost about fifteen dollars. Anyways, Antigua Tours by Elizabeth Bell was recommended in our book, so we definitely went to her agency. As i have learned, Elizabeth Bell is from Palo Alto, California, and she has been living in Antigua since 1969, she published ...

Finding broomy was pretty easy... it was only a matter of checking facebook, and walking to his hostel. We both admitted that we actually enjoyed not having each others company.... and that we need to go our own way again somewhere down the track...Antigua was a nice town. Old colonial feel. Most importantly, it had good food and coffee... which is about all I need. There wasnt actually a whole lot to do there that wasnt hideously expensive, so I was keen to move on... looking for more advent...

ERIC! For me, Antigua doesn't appear on the city list when I am looking to validate - had to add it myself. Anyway... So, Antigua, my third colonial town in Central America and what a place.  It used to be the capital, until they decided to build Guatemala City (seems to be a running theme in this part of the world) and I think it has benefitted from that decision.  I can't imagine this place with skyscrapers and the like.  Those conquistadors certainly knew how to build a c...
