Very pleasant except for the food poisoning Jul 22, 2011
My boyfriend and I found ourselves stranded in Goa for Christmas this past year after not being able to get onto our train to Kerala. Friends staying nearby in a much pricier establishment helped set up a few nights stay for us at Anthy's Guest House in Benaulim - a nice little hostel right on the beach. As places to be stranded go, a beach resort in Goa is ideal! Luckily for us they had a hut free for us for a bit more than we'd paid in Anjuna, but still a reasonable price. Even more luckily, the beach in front of Anthy's is something of an anomaly - everywhere else in Benaulim the beaches are CRAMMED with people, but the stretch Anthy's is on is blissfully quiet and spacious.

The staff at Anthy's is made up entirely (as far as we saw) of local guys in their 20s or 30s, all very chatty, friendly, and ready to party. They have a restaurant on the beach that serves food and drinks either at their tables or out at the beach chairs further towards the water for reasonable prices. Our room was very clean, the bed had a mosquito net around it, and there was an attached shower - the only problem was that the walls were apparently made of plywood so sound and insects wafted through as if the room were open to the elements.

On Christmas Eve Anthy's had a big party and beach bonfire, complete with fancy seafood meals that could be ordered ahead of time. The party was great fun, involving a lot of drinking and dancing (on the part of both the guests and the staff), but two unfortunate things happened to bring the night down a bit. 1.) Given our limited budget, I asked the staff guy taking the dinner orders the day before to give me smaller, cheaper prawns - something he assured me he would take care of. When the bill arrived my meal was twice as expensive as he'd promised it would be, and even after arguing we couldn't bring the price back down to the quoted level. 2.) The unexpectedly expensive prawns gave me a violent case of food poisoning that had me trapped in my bathroom throughout Christmas morning.

Despite that hiccup, I would honestly recommend Anthy's to budget travellers looking for a nice quiet place on the beach in Goa. We were lucky to have a relaxing Christmas on a beautiful beach where we could read and swim unmolested throughout the beautiful days even after our travel plans fell through. Just avoid the prawns!
