I was beginning to wonder if I will ever bump into any other Filipino on my third day here in Fin Del Mundo - Ushuaia, Argentina. Again, the Filipino diaspora was not to disappoint. On my way to kill about 2.5 hours before we board the MS Clipper Adventure, I wandered along the main street in Ushuaia, Avenida San Martin. As I walking I heard several people talking in Filipino, mostly men, likely working for the cruise ships plying the South Atlantic, South Pacific cruising route.…

On Thursday the Drake Passage was quite OK again to the point where an engine room tour was organised. You could really tell the people working there were proud of their work, because everything was very clean. The rest of the day I spent sorting out my photos, making sure to type everything in before I would forget it. Friday morning I got up at 6AM to see Cape Horn, the Southermost point of South America. On Friday evening the expedition leader gave a recap, and after that we had some cock…

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN USHUAIA!!!We did not do much here. we disembarked at 8am. I woke up at 7am to take photos of our arrival. What a week makes. It was very cloudy and cold last week. when we arrived it was sunny, somewhat clear, about 70 degrees. Unfortunately, the coffee shops were not open. Which they should be if they knew a ship was arriving, we just walked around and hoped there was anything to do. My mum wanted to go shopping. I just walked around the area. I wanted to get rid…

Weeks 39 to 40 - Antartica 2006

Pre-Antartica Trip Trauma - Did we miss the boat?   A week before we were due to start our trip to Antartica we realised that we had still not heard from GAP (who we were going to be travelling with) as to whether all of our warm ski gear, that my Mum kindly sent to their office back in August, had arrived or otherwise.  Finally, we managed to get hold of the local office in Ushuaia (where the trip was to set sail from), the day before we arrived. They took the postal de…

After the late night last night of pool, poker, and pub, I slept in this morning until nearly 11am! Rustling around in my things, I discovered a couple of bummers. Looking at my calendar, I sadly realized that it was LAST night I was supposed to meet David and Eileen at the Dublin Irish Pub... I was there, but certainly much later than we had agreed to meet.  (For some reason I thought it was Wednesday Dec 10 that we were supposed to meet, but now I see it was Tuesday December 9 -…

The end of the world

Today we slung on the boots and packs and walked from Ush into the mountains behind the city. We climbed up through gorgeous alpine forests until we reached the snow. Great views over Ush and the Beagle Channel. From here we continued up onto the snowy moutain to view a glacier, which we never really found. It was more like a mountain with lots of snow on it. Maybe we were spoilt by the sight of the Perito Moreno Glacier near Calafate. The views and walking on the soft snow were well worth th…

To Ushuaia to board our ship
posted by:

From Buenos Aires it was a 3.5 hour flight to Ushuaia. This is the southernmost city of the south American continent and the world! We did not get to see the town other than the drive between the airport to the port, ince our main goal is to board our waiting ship, the M. S. Caledonian Star operated by Lindblad Expeditions. The sky was dark with clouds. The small city of about 50000 people has become the main departure point for ships visiting Antartica due to its location.Remembering this is…

Since I will leave Ushuaia tomorrow early morning, I had to try my best to visit all places within one day. In the morning, I hiked a 1000m tall mountain which had snow at the top. Actually I did 400m myself only. In the afternoon, I joined a boat tour to see the penguine, sea lions and birds. The cold weather lets me remember the story about sun and wind. Even it was a sunny day and I wear the thickest clothes, it was really cold coz of the big wind.

The question that most people have about travelling to Ushuaia is simple: "Is it worth it?" It's a question that I've asked myself pretty often over the last month or so and the answer has always been "Yes - just shut up and do it Salad." This answer has little to do with my old friend Senor Logic and everything to do with a romantic, yet persistent, notion that took up residence in my brain and has shown no inclination of packing up. This n…

Couldn´t possibly travel any further South in Argentina, I made it to the end of the world and all by bus! I have no idea of the distance from here to Quito, its a long way! The border crossings to get to Ushuaia were rather tiresome, I was trying to sleep in between and kept getting woken up to have my passport stamped as we went out of Argentina, into Chile and back into Aregentina again. Half of the time I didn´t know which country I was in or whether I was getting an exit or entry stamp…

We arrived in Ushuaia early afternoon an had the next day free before we boarded the MS Explorer headed for Antartica. So me and two fellow travelers decided that we go the next day for a hike in Tierra del fuego. The next day we got a cab into ten national park and got dropt of at the trainstation of the most southern railway. It was a great experience to ride an old steam train thru this stunning park. At the end of the line there was the busses waiting for all the oth…
