Anny Studios - Quite The Mixed Bag!!! Aug 26, 2014
First of all, I think I should say that rating this hostel was a bit tougher for me than usual. In particular, you'll notice that the ratings for individual aspects don't seem to sum up to the overall rating. This is 'cos of the huge contrast between degree of good and bad.

As far as 'Value' is concerned, its definitely good. I stayed there early in the summer of 2014, well before the peak season. But even so, the rates offered are spectacular, and particularly appealing to budget travelers.

Many varying views exist on the subject of 'Location'; some that Perissa Beach is a little out of the way, and others that its great for those who wanna focus on spending time at the beach. Both can be considered correct, as the ride from Fira to Perissa is about an hour by bus, and there's not really much else around there than Perissa's black sand beach, which stretches for over 5km, all the way over to Perivolos. However, honestly, considering that one of the most common ways to get around in Santorini is by renting a quad-bike, Perissa being out of the way is of no real consequence. The abundance of rental companies in and around Perissa too make it convenient to get to the other parts of the island without too much hassle. So overall, I think the 'Location' of Anny Studios is great, if cost is an important consideration, and unless you're hell-bent on getting a caldera view, it a good base to start in.

'Cleanliness' at Anny Studios... Nothing really worth mentioning. Nothing great, and nothing that raised any eyebrows either.

'Amenities'-wise, its a pretty decent package. There is wifi coverage in the public areas, great bar/pool area that can get really lively and entertaining, there's some free to use PCs with internet access, a washing machine, and a shuttle bus service to the ports for regular ferries. Also, at the time of my stay, they arranged free pickup at the ferry port or airport, with prior arrangement.

'Bed' was comfortable enough to get a good night's sleep, though I must say that the layout of the dorm I was in felt awfully claustrophobic for some bunks (I was sure glad to be in a bunk at the entrance to the dorm).

The 'Bathroom' is the only thing I wish was better, but then again, my time in Greece made me feel like bathrooms and toilets are just a common questionable area of Greek life. At Anny Studios, specifically, after a few early risers have been about their business, the bathroom smells kinda funky, and the smell can sometimes tend to drift into the sleeping areas too (funnily enough, the claustrophobic bunks). Its issues with the plumbing, but if you're one of the early risers, and the drainage has had time to settle overnight, you'll get away unscathed. Actually, come to think of it, the plumbing in general was terrible!!! Even showering took forever with the low water pressure, and the water smelled funny. LOL, one day I even made use of a shower at the beach to make myself feel clean!!!

But worse still, the toilet in the public area is TINY! I'm not a big guy (height-wise), and I dread to imagine how someone a few inches taller would manage in there! So one piece of advice, at all costs, make good use of the dorm toilet BEFORE you check out!

On a serious note, though, this is one area Anny Studios really should focus on improving, and I hope they will receive enough feedback to prompt such steps.

'Service'... This is the best thing about this hostel. All the previous reviews talk about it, and I will affirm it too! The now somewhat famous 'Adonis' is a great fella, who does pretty much EVERYTHING at the hostel. Even the other guys working there are always approachable and happy to help, advise and even join in the fun with the guests! It all adds so much more to the great atmosphere of the hostel.

Other points to take into account are that if you're not the partying type, and/or tired after a day walking around the other Santorini villages, Perissa is a cool place to unwind, and Anny Studios is right on the beach front, allowing for a nice stroll, plenty of restaurants and bars, and even the hostel's in house bar/lounge is a great place to chill out in the evening and meet people.

Check out my review of Tranquilo, an amazing Bar/Restaurant on the beach, on the spots I frequented during my stay!

Also, Anny Studios has a lot of great contacts with local service providers and tour companies, and offer great packages for its guests. Be sure to check them out, as it can be a lot more convenient than making your way about on your own.

So all in all, for me, the issues with the plumbing and the great service sorta cancel each other out, and the cheap prices and atmosphere tip the balance in favour of a 'Recommended' overall rating.

Cheers!

Great hostel on the beach Jul 02, 2013
What a great find this was!!

This hotel built in traditional style is located right on Perissa black beach of Santorini! It's a hostel, with studios. There are dormitory rooms, and studio like private rooms.

Despite being on the beach, this hotel has a very nice pool with a bar. Bar is open until 10pm, so it's quiet at night.

I had booked a private room at this place before I arrived on Santorini, because my ferry was arriving after midnight. Most hotels on the island offer free transfer to and from the port. This is a big plus, considering the location of the port.

They waited for me when I got off the ferry around 1:30am, and drove me to the hostel.

The guy working at the reception was very nice and offered lots of information without me even asking anything.

My room was big, with a double bed, desk and chair, AC, TV, wardrobe, small balcony, and half a kitchen! I had sink, ranges, fridge, pots and pans, utensils.

Bathroom was nice too, with shower. There is no fresh water on the island. Water is not drinkable, but this hostel has drinks, including water, for sale. Due to their problems with water, when you shower you may find water a bit salty, but this didn't bother me at all. The whole island has this problem.

As this is really a hostel, they had couple of computers for use in the common room. WiFi worked well in the common area, not so strong in the room. Common room had tables and benches, and it's right next to the pool, so with nice views.

They had all the information posted around the reception desk, with bus times around the island, boat trips offered, car rental etc. This was really helpful!

The guy at the reception gave me a map, showed me all the interesting things on the island, wrote down times it took by bus, prices, etc.

Bus stop is about five minutes walking from the hostel, and it's easy to find.

They help with renting cars, quads, scooters, booking tours, etc.

And all this for about 25EUR a night!!!

I would love to go back to Perissa, and I would definitely book this place again!
