Whilst travelling around Goa, Anjuna Market is a must. Brightly coloured cloths illuminate the sky if you are lucky enough to feel a sea breeze. Sweet smelling incense combined with indian spices tickle your nostrils and tastebuds at exactly the same time and children chatter exitedly as theycongregate at your heel waiting for a rupee or two to spend on local produce.
Its hard to decide whether the community is hippy or indian, but rumour has it that the market was introduced by the hippy colony trying to sell their wares to raise funds for further residence in what can only be referred to as paradise. Now anyone who has anything of any saleable value pitches a stand at the market in the hope of capturing some custom. For a real taste of northern Goa Anjuna Market must be experienced. If you are wise with your money there are some fabulous cultural pieces to be found at incredible value. Tips: 1)You can expect to pay a third of the price that is initially requested. Haggle hard, it's expected and can be extemely amusing. 2)A cab from one end of Goa to the other should cost no more than 2000 Rps (approx £20) 3) Depending on the time of year you should be able to find more than adequate accommodation. I managed a 4 room apartment with 2 bathrooms, lounge, diner and two bedrooms, communal pool and restaurant for 2000 Rps per night (April 2007) at the Anjuna Beach Resort. (hardly a travellers budget, but we all like a little luxury sometimes ;o) |
