Angkor, Cambodia -› Angkor Wat, Cambodia -› …
the temples at angkor were so much more than i had anticipated... enormous in scale but with incredibly fine detail .
there were places that were absolutely tranquil, still,
almost absorbing sound.
i was surrounded by magic every day
it became like visiting old friends, certain faces, carvings.

Morning GloryAt about 5am, we left for Angkor Wat. Whenever I see major sights, what usually comes to mind is, "that's it?" So I try to keep my expectations low. But I could not contain my excitement for the temples of Angkor. Our guide for the day met us at our hotel and he asked us to call him Ch…

In order to get to the Angkor Wat site for the sunrise, you need to get up at 4am... ouch! The hotel staff knew that I was getting up for sunrise, so they prepared a breakfast for me, omelette, coffee, along with some food for me to take for when I wait for the sun to rise :)One of the staff drives …

It was on my short visit back to the Netherlands that people asked me if I saw the temples a lot. I was living in Siem Reap, it's obvious if you live so near. The truth is that I have to work hard on my research and sometimes also in the weekend. And usually there were the trips elsewhere in the we…

Although this blog is not particulary about backpacking with kids, I would like to say to all those mums and dads who are still hesitating whether or not to treat their offspring on some adventure instead of again dragging them to that nice, comfy and spotless all-inclusive resort: just do it! I did, and boy, not only did my 15-year old son and I have the time of our life, I think I gave him something valuable that will benefit him forever!

Bangkok, Thailand -› Luang Prabang, Laos -› …
My first time start-to-end backpacking trip and my first time in a tropical country... and it was great! We first took a boat up north to a fishing village and then went down to beautiful Luang Prabang, next to partytown Vang Vieng and finally to Vientiane. The overnight bus brought us to Pakse with an impressive two day jungle treck through Xe Pian NPA. After a stay at the 4000 islands we crossed the border to Phnom Penh and the temples of Angkor and went back from Saigon.
