Angel's Gate Lighthouse Oct 24, 2017
The Los Angeles Harbor (San Pedro Harbor; Angel's Gate) lighthouse in San Pedro is located at the end of the San Pedro Harbor breakwater about 1/2 mile east of Point Fermin. So in order to see this lighthouse you have to take a boat. I was able to see the lighthouse from a Harbor Tour and also as our cruise ship left the harbor. You could also see the lighthouse from a ferry to Santa Catalina as the ferries pass the lighthouse while departing San Pedro.

This lighthouse was built in 1913 and is Active. The light focal plane is 73 ft above sea level and gives a green flash every 15 seconds. The light was changed from white to green in order to distiguish it from the “light noise” on the hills behind the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is a 69 ft cylindrical steel and concrete tower on an octagonal concrete base, all on a concrete crib. It survived the Long Beach earthquake of 1933. The lighthouse is painted white with narrow vertical black stripes, lantern and gallery black; concrete base is white. Continuously operating fog horn (2 blasts every 30 seconds). The original 4th order clamshell Fresnel lens is on display at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro.

This is the only surviving lighthouse of its type. In 2008 members of the Cabrillo Beach Boosters launched an effort to secure grant funds to restore the lighthouse. In May 2010, the Los Angeles Harbor Commission allocated $1.8 million for the restoration. The restoration project began in October 2011 and was completed in May 2012.
