Angangueo Overview

Angangueo is one of only two official access areas to visit the Monarch Butterflies in their winter quarters. Angangueo is located several hours drive northwest of Mexico City at high altitudes. The road is a narrow winding two lane for the last hour. The scenery during this last hour is spectacular. I have not found any place to stay and you are not allow to camp in the butterfly park. I have visited the Monarchs numerous times over the last 20 years and have always found it very enjoyable. Angangueo access point is nicer, easier to drive to and a shorter walk to reach the clusters of butterflies. There is some local political unrest in and around these Monarch Butterfly parks between the local loggers and the people attempting to preserve the delicate butterfly habitat. My opinion is to visit the Monarchs now before they are all gone due to illegal logging.
