Andy Capp Statue Mar 21, 2017
Probably Hartlepool's favourite son, cartoon character Andy Capp is honoured with a bronze statue in the Headland of Hartlepool. There was quite a big controversy about this statue, given the fact that the 1950s humour of the early strips depicted domestic violence.

The statue was finally unveiled on June 28th 2007 by Jean Mary Glynn Berry, the widow of the Andy Capp's creator Reg Smythe. It is quite easy to find as there are a couple of signs pointing to it close to St. Hilda's Church.

It's a statue and I wouldn't say that it's a must-see. However, if you are in the Headland anyway, a visit to this art of Hartlepool wouldn't be complete without saying hello to Andy.

Fun fact: In my home town of Mainz, a small football club was named after “Willi Wacker” - that's the name Andy Capp has in the comic strips translated into German.

The statue faces the outer part of the Headland Marina, close to the Pot House Pub.
