The Androscoggin Swinging Bridge is a largely unknown pedestrian span across the Androscoggin River, connecting Brunswick and Topsham. Originally built in 1892 by the Roebling Company (if that name rings a bell, the Roebling’s where the ones who built the Brooklyn Bridge), the bridge underwent serious rehabilitation a few years back and was re-opened to the public in 2007.

While I feel lovely views up and down the Androscoggin are the primary attraction, the bridge’s notoriety spawns from the notion that it swings, adding a fright factor for purported thrill seekers. I am here to tell you it does not swing so much as it bounces. There is no doubt the structure is wobbling a bit as you trek across, but it is subtle and not scary at all. However, when the Androscoggin is at peak flow after winter runoff, the powerful movement may concern you whether the entire bridge might be swept away!

A paved pathway running beside the river on the Topsham side (walk / bike) invites you to pack a picnic lunch and ramble. You are able to scamper upon some big boulders right on the river which offer splendid sights for your meal. Unless you live local you will be cruising past here on Route 1, which is the Brunswick side and a bit problematic. There is a small parking lot for the bridge, but you may only access it if heading south on Route 1 (and most people will be heading north). There is a great deal of traffic on Route 1 and while vehicles are pretty much absent from the Topsham side, that takes a bit longer to get to – you have to exit Route 1 and navigate several additional turns.
