Observet the Andalusia, Alabam Historic Districts Apr 28, 2017
Andalusia has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are 2 historic districts and 5 individual locations in Andalusia listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are several nice commercial buildings in the downtown area especially near the courthouse square. I also really liked the old theater. Andalusia has several nice old churches built using a few different architectural styles, and quite a few great old houses. I like the way the old southern towns were built around the courthouse squares. The old Three Notch School, which is now the Andalusia City Hall, was completed in 1914 using a design by architect C. Frank Galliher on land purchased in 1902 from Mrs. Malachi Riley. The large auditorium in the school also served as the civic center and many of the city functions were held here. The school served the children of Andalusia for about 85 years until it was renovated and reopened as the city hall in 1904. The Three Notch School got its name from Three Notch Road which passed by here as part of the route from Pensacola to Fort Mitchell in Russell County along the Chattahoochee River. The Three Notch Road was surveyed by CPT Daniel E. Burch who the marked the route by cutting three notches in the trees along the way, hence the name of the road which still exists today. Another of the buildings of interest in town is the old building which contained John G. Wright, Sr.'s Garage. The building is not so interesting itself, but it is where the 15 December 1944 wedding of Hank Williams Sr., and Audrey Sheppard was held. Famous singer Randall Hank Williams Jr. was born to the couple on 26 May 1949. The old jail complete with its own cemetery is also quite interesting. There are several nice murals in the downtown area too.
