For many visitors to Spain, Andalucia -- the country's southernmost region -- appears to be the country's cultural heart. So many popular impressions of Spain have their roots here: Moorish architecture, flamenco and the "Gypsy" (Rom) culture, bullfighting, equestrianism, sherry, siestas.... It's hard to convince people you've been to Spain unless you've been here.

No other part of Spain was as deeply shaped by the Islamic presence in the Iberian peninsula as Andalucia was. The three most famous sights built by or influenced by the "Moors" (Spanish Muslims) are the Great Mosque of Cordoba (now a Christian cathedral), the Royal Alcazar of Seville (the Spanish royal family's winter residence), and the Alhambra in Granada (a magnificent fortress dating from late in the period of Muslim rule).

The eagle has landed

Today is the day, my sister will get married. Toninght at about six o'clock they will say "I do". Sensible as my sister is, she gave us the morning off. After an exhausting friday, full of exciting impressions, a day that tickeled all the senses, we could have this saturdaymorning to ourselves! My sister was going to be prepared, dressed, made-up and so was her future husband of course. The group split up. My wife and I went for a stroll along the riverside. Not too far, not too long. Just ea...

Touching Spanish grounds

The airplane landed, roughly yet on schedule. The Sierra Nevada beneath us grew bigger and bigger, and the huge fields of tonsil trees came closer. But Malaga isn't the place one likes to stay for a long time. Here the roads are dirty and the streets noisy and crowded. We take the train to Ronda, with beautiful views. The mountains are all around us, scorched and dry, but oh so overwhelming. Deep canyons gaze at me as we race over them. Beneath us shimmer lakes and are bridges clinch...

I didn't sleep too well, since the shock of discovering the beetle hadn't completely faded out. Yet no other creepy creatures turned up so the night passed by relatively well. I showered in a rush this morning though, as you never know what else one might run into in that scary bathroom... Nothing specific was planned today. Normally we would have spend more time in Triana yesterday and visited the Alcazar now, but since Triana wasn't that special we did all that already. That gave u...
