The Quiet Ancient Town of Wuzhen Dec 23, 2009
Wuzhen is an ancient watertown that lies north of Tongxiang City in Zhejiang Province, west of Huzhou City, and north of Wujiang County in Jiangsu Province on the border of these three cities and between the two provinces. Now it is the economic, cultural and transportation center of the surrounding villages and towns. With a total area of 71.19 sq. km, township area of 2.5 sq. km., total population of 60,000 and permanent population of 12,000. has stood on the riverbanks for nearly 2,000 years.

On both sides of a slabstone-paved street stand pubs, restaurants, pawnshops, weaving and dyeing establishments, and other businesses, all housed in wooden structures of brown. Rivers and creeks spanned with stone bridges in various designs flow through the town, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal passes by with rivers and canals crisscrossing the whole town.

Located on the river and on a lake bed, Wuzhen is flat with interwoven rivers, a mild and wet climate with an abundance of both rain and sunshine as well as rich products, so it is known as the “town of fish, rice and silk”. It inherits a millenary-long history and culture, simple and beautiful river town scenery, a unique flavor of delicacies, colorful folk festivals, and eternally unchanging lifestyle make Wuzhen a living fossil of ancient culture. This is inborn beauty.

For hundreds of years, its residents have been building houses along the rivers and trading near the bridges. the ancient docks, waterside pavilions, and corridors stretch out for miles and erect a romantic atmosphere that is typical to jiang nan water towns. wu zhen boasts its prosperous past and simple lifestyle. tongxiang's unique folk custom, such as boxing boat, hua gu opera with local character, shadow play and gathering pilgrim, show the rich tradition of the locality!

wu zhen is famous for its natural beauty and many talented people in history. since the south dynasty when the prince of liang kingdom-zhao ming once studied here, such literary master as mao dun had left many cultural relics here. if boating around the water network, or lingering in the lanes one can always feel the serenity, peacefulness, and subtle beauty of the jiang nan water town. Its antique buildings, mostly from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, old streets and bridges are well-preserved. It became one of the first Ten Famous Historic Cultural Towns in the country in 2003.

In Wu Zhen there are serveral famous tourist attractions, for instance , the Former residence of mao dun: mao dun is a famous literature writer in modern china, with novel of 'midnight', etc. literary works. his former home is located in the middle part of guan qian street of the town, where he had his happy childhood. the home is a traditional chinese style house built in qing dynasty.Another Famous attractions is the Xiu zhen guan which is a taoist temple which is built in xian ping yuan period of bei song dynasty. it is one of three famous taoist temples in south bank in yangtze river.Lastly the Ancient stage: the stage is built in 1749. it is sitting back on a major river of the town and facing a plaza. in the ancient time, farmers around the town came to watch plays by rowing boat. while a play was going on, boats were floating on the river.
