The city of Ancient Salamis Jan 04, 2009
The ancient city of Salamis is found just outside the modern day city of Farmagusta. There is limited transport out there - hence you will need to find some sort of transport to get out there - either by car or by a taxi. When you have paid your entrance fee you are free to go wonder around the place.
The area is pretty big so you should expect to spend a few hours if you want to take it all in. If you on the other hand only want to see the main sight like the baths and the theatre you could do it a lot faster. During the winter the heat is not really a problem - but I would assume the place could get seriously hot during the summer and there is no place to by water inside - hence bring plenty if you go during the heat of the midday. The history of the place is old dating back to Salamis being one of the original kingdoms of Cyprus. It is mention in the writings of Homer and had an important harbor which was used in the trade with the near east. The city declined when the harbor silted up and the trade moved to a new town just a big south of here. Part of the On the trail of Aphrodite travel blog |
