Ananuri Fortress Reviews
Ananuri Fortress Jun 17, 2011
Ananuri Fortress Monastery is situated at the end of Zhinvali lake. Most churches in Georgia are fortified, or have a curtain wall, but Ananuri goes far further. The castle, the church and the lake combine for a wondrous site.
Ananuri was a castle and seat of Dukes of Aragvi which ruled the area from the 13th century. The castle was the scene of numerous battles. In 1739, Ananuri was attacked by forces from a rival duchy, and was set on fire. The Aragvi clan was massacred.
For good photo angles go up the square tower, or back track up the main road and onto the high bridge.
It’s possible to take public transport to Ananuri. Heading north it will come into sight on the right (about 20 metres off the main road) so you can ask the driver to let you off. There are some small trinket shops on site, though not many items of food to choose from.
